Waking Up to a Walmart Oligarchy

I'm not a fan of Walmart. I don't agree with their employment practices and I certainly don't agree with their inability to support local companies.

Furthermore, it saddens me that a company who has essentially built their empire on the backs of low wage earners and inexpensive product suppliers acts entitled enough to work with government officials to punish those Americans who choose to be free thinking individuals.

Why Microsoft will never be as cool as Apple

I think we all can agree that both Microsoft and Apple have their place in the computing universe. There are nuances of Microsoft Windows that seem to work better than Apple but then there's many advantages that Apple has over Microsoft as well.

Bilbo's Pizza Great Bread Recipe

When I attended Western Michigan University many years ago, my friends and I would gather at the local Bilbo's pizza for study and fun. One of my staple appetizers was something called Great Bread. A curiously different alternative to cheese garlic bread.

Getting the most out of a CMS Website

I've built thousands of websites since 1997. In a matter of speaking, I was there at the moment content management (CMS) became a reality for many people in the Southwest Michigan after an experiment in the production room of a little web development firm known as The Internet Man.

Thanksgiving 2012

I must say that I had a great weekend in Wisconsin - specifically at Blue Harbor Resort. The air was cool, the sun was bright and we had a great time running around visiting tourist attractions.

2012 Elections

VOTE on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. Our country needs your vote!!!

It is virtually impossible to avoid the marketing efforts of those running for office. The heralded YouTube video of the little girl, Abby, crying about "Bronco Bamma and Mit Romney" pretty much sums it up for most Americans at this point.

But for my friends in  Michigan, I thought I'd break down some other important topics that will be showing up on our ballots. Read on...

Presidential Debate 2012

When I was in my late teens I used to watch movies like Red Dawn, Predator and Rambo and marvel at how awesome they were. Admitedly, entertainment in the 80's was rather unique - and simple - because the population allowed horrible, non-talented people to make millions of dollars on less than adequate performances.

This, ironically, isn't far from what we are fed by our politicians. Fast forward to 2012...

To Share or Not to Share...

So I've got this great new song (at least I think it is) and I've been sitting on it for about 4 months. I've posted it on my site here but haven't publicly shared it... like really shared it. And so, last night, I finally pulled the trigger and posted it on my Facebook account. Now, I'm wondering. Did I do the right thing?

New SoundCloud Account!

I suppose it's important to make yourself "social" while you either promote yourself or activities you are involved in. Facebook is clearly part of that movement but there are a number of other gems that are out there that do more than just give people an outlet to tell people when they shower, eat and sleep. Enter: SoundCloud.

This site is awesome!

New Design, New Direction

kevinrsmith.com has taken on a new look!

I've been working on updating my site with the newest release of Umbraco (4.9) . For those who aren't familiar with Umbraco, it's the content management system I use to run this website. After working in version 5.0 for some time, Umbraco staff decided to scrap that version and revert back to an older release. This was likely the best thing they could have done since 5.0 was a miserable environment to work in but it meant I had to scrap my original site and start over.
